Belts are among the most important accessories that
people carry in their wardrobes, and it is important to
learn how to choose a belt size, so that you don’t ruin
your entire attire. Stores use a number of sizes for the
belts they sell, but it is up to you to know which is
the right belt size for you. There are several things
that you need to keep in mind before shopping for a new
belt that will help you. Here is some basic information
on how to choose a belt size.
How are belts measured
The total length of the belt won’t help you when you search for a belt of your size. Actually, in order to be labeled according to sizes, belts are measured from the line between the buckle and the leather and the middle hole at the other end. While some manufacturers prefer numbers for sizes, these numbers are also doubled by letter indicators from XS to XL. Here are the corresponding values for women belts:
-XS means 24-26 inches
-S means 28-30 inches
-M means 32-34 inches
-L means 36-38 inches
-XL means 38-40 inches
Should the belt fit perfectly?
Now that you know how belt sizes are measured, the next question is only natural: should you choose the belt that is exactly the same size as your waistline? The answer is ‘no’, and it is advised to choose a belt size that is about 2 inches longer than your waistline numbers. Even so, take one little aspect into consideration. Some belt models are already labeled with a 2 inches larger size, because of the position of the belt, so it is strongly advised that you ask a shop assistant to come to your help.
Measure your old belts
If you don’t trust completely the measurements done by belt manufacturers, you can always rely on information at hand. Take an old belt, lay it on a table or other firm surface, and measure from the line between the buckle and the leather part of the belt to the hole that you have used on a daily basis and it is the most comfortable for you. This way, you will know which belt size is the most appropriate for you.
Never measure from tip to tip
There is no use to measure a belt from one tip to another. The total length gives nothing on the belt size, because it does not take your waistline measurements into consideration. Stick to the measurements presented above or on the belt sizes you have already tried. This is how to choose a belt size properly.
